I think it also happened in the early levels of the Joan of Arc campaign, but I can't quite remember. Sometimes that doesn't matter, especially for later/harder levels. It feels like I should look up strategies cause I can't win on my own. Now it feels like I should be super quick and know exactly what units and building to make in the best order. Back in the days I just tried stuff and it worked out. In Starcraft I kinda know which units are good against which, a good building order, not taking too long, etc.īut I am clueless in AoE. However, this is just my personal opinion and in no way a universal experience.įrom what I gathered (also when Googling) the AI is significantly harder in the campaigns than in the original game.Īnd while I understand it's fun to have smarter AI, it's not when it just gets unplayable for rookie/casual players.

Hautevilles (rated three-swords) is at most a two-sword and Grand Dukes (rated two-swords) seems balanced to me. With Lords of the West, Edward Longshanks (also rated one-sword) only brought a real challenge to me on scenarios 2 and 4 on hard difficulty, but even then I managed to win them. A&K's one-sword reminds me of Tariq's one-sword. Jadwiga and Jan Zizka seem more balanced, some easier scenarios, some harder scenarios. The Algirdas and Kestutis is rated one-sword but on moderate difficulty the enemies build Trebuchets on literally every scenario and then they even seem to combine the attacks against you as if it were a "defend against a siege" scenario. I've done them all on standard and, with few exceptions, most scenarios weren't easy at all (now I'm doing them on moderate). I've also noticed the new campaigns to be quite hard. But yeah, as far as I know, the AI has been updated in the background to be a bit more smart. I mean I've beat every campaign mission on hard by now but tend to play easier difficulties to just mess around with the AI or something. But yeah, I usually play on the middle difficulty and it was significantly more difficult than I was used to. He is still present in the Co-Op version of the same scenario, under the main player's control.Originally posted by Constantine XI:I've noticed that there is an increase in the difficulty on the new expansion AI, but I haven't played any of the others for a while. Alaric was present in The Giant Falls under the control of the Ataulf player, but was later replaced by Ataulf himself.

In the Definitive Edition a unique hero cavalry Alaric the Goth is available in the Editor. In the remaining scenarios, Alaric is represented by a renamed Kushluk. In the first two scenarios of the original campaign, Alaric is represented by a renamed Theodoric the Goth. The player's color being changed from blue (in The Forgotten) to green (in the Definitive Edition) may have been to make it consistent with the color of the Visigoths in the The Catalaunian Fields scenario. The icon of the Alaric campaign in The Forgotten is a Roman Imperial helmet, while in the Definitive Edition, it is a Germanic Spangenhelm on top of a Roman long sword ( Spatha), similar to those of the Huskarl.

AGE OF EMPIRES 2 DEFINITIVE EDITION CAMPAIGN MOD

The earlier, unofficial mod version of the first campaign includes segments of a TV docudrama as cutscenes, and the author (CAELIR) voices all characters in the scenarios. The developers may have accidentally swapped the first and third scenarios' locations. Ravenna is in the northeast of Italy on the Adriatic Coast, not close to Rome. In The Forgotten, the location of Emperor of the West in the campaign map is erroneous. In an AMA for Age of Kings Heaven, Ensemble Studios designer Sandy Petersen stated that he would have liked a Gothic campaign based on "either Alaric or Theodoric", but without clarifying if making such campaign had ever been planned for The Age of Kings or which of the historical Gothic kings with these names he meant.Chronologically, the Alaric campaigns are the earliest in the timeframe of the game and overlap with the late timeframe of Age of Empires.
